Subject - What is Natural?
2012 January 30
As a new parent, it can be extremely overwhelming to find products that are truly safe for the most precious thing in your life, your child. There are lots of products in the market place to choose from but what is truly safe?
Don’t compromise yourself and your family’s future with ingredients that may eventually be added to the “toxic list” at some point...If it sounds to good to be true, it likely is!
As parents, it’s our responsibility to do our homework and to educate ourselves about the harmful effects of ingredients that may be lurking in the products we use and the damaging effects they can have. A very well known brand has formaldehyde in some of their products in order to preserve them for your child! You have to ask yourself “why would I want to put these toxic products with chemicals on my little one’s ultra pure skin?”
The word “natural” can mean so many things on a label, as a consumer reading the ingredient listings you should understand what is listed. Anything that has paraben at the end of it (ie. methylparaben, propylparaben) DEA (ie. cocamide DEA) and PEG (ie. PEG- 8 Stearate) should be avoided, they are all toxic ingredients. These are only a few of the common ingredients that are added to some baby products, in order to prolong the shelf life. I use my “mom logic” if you can’t pronounce the word it’s likely not natural in most cases.
So what ingredients should you look for? There are lots of wonderful natural ingredients that have specific qualities to calm and heal that you should be aware of :
- Organic Hemp Seed Oil - Anti-inflammatory, balances dry skin, helps heal skin lesions, has anti-oxidants and moisture balancing properties.
- Shea Butter - Hydrates and softens, helps with rashes, acne, anti-inflammatory
- Orange Blossom - Anti stress and calming agent.
- Calendula Oil - helps with inflamed skin, softens and soothes.
- Green Tea Extract - anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory
- Sunflower Oil - acts as a protective barrier for sensitive skins, helps moisturize
The bottom line is - you can get all the benefits of great skin care ingredients for your children with out the harmful chemicals, by just doing a little label reading when you buy. Isn’t your little one worth that little extra care.

2012 January 14
Eczema is a very frustrating condition for anyone to have but when it's your child suffering, you really want a cure! Unfortunately, there is no real cure for eczema and all cases are a little different, so it can be very hard to find the right things to use to actually relive the irritation.
Avoiding the use of a steroid cream is important for most parents.
Tawna Hill Baby has had several success stories with regards to eczema and irritable skin conditions with our Milk & Oatmeal Bath Powder & Super Smoothie Cream.
We believe less is more when it comes to caring for eczema. Keep your routine of bathing very simple. Milk & Oatmeal Bath Powder is very gentle for this irritable skin condition, followed by a small amount of Super Smoothie Cream warmed up in your finger tips first and then applied gently to the skin. It's so scary to read about all the toxins in our world but when big companies know that they can change the ingredients to make these items safer for our children why is this not taking place? This article proves that big companies (Kellogg's) can make a change if they want to... Subject - "Fake Naturals"
2011 March 28
I was so upset and disturbed by the news post "Lousy Labels" by CBC MarketPlace's Erica Johnson that I wanted to inform as many friends about the deception in the consumer world - so not to be taken further advantage of. A friend from the UK has also posted to her blog:
‘Fake’ naturals or how we can be responsible mothers | Galina Atchkassova-Portianoi Blog
From the moment I became pregnant with my first child my life has changed profoundly. As soon as you cradle your baby in the arms, you are overwhelmed with love and fear for that little bundle that came into this world and those emotions stay with you until the day that you leave this world.
I want my kids to be healthy and happy and in my quest to do the best that I can, I have been trying to make conscious choices to use the natural products, organic where possible, feed my kids with healthy and nutritious meals, often using organic produce and dress them in mostly natural fibres, like wool in the winter and cotton in the summer. I want to give them a good start and do my best where I can make a difference to their health and development.
The market for children’s skincare-after all, that’s where the money is- seem to be expanding, with new products hitting the shelves all the time. I have always been ‘picky’ about the skincare (don’t ask me why, but I have had a really bad experience with the blue coloured bottle of Johnson’s baby bath) and any paediatrician would tell you that unfortunately more and more kids are born with allergies and skin conditions, some inherited, some environmental.
As my son’s skin can be a bit dry sometimes, I have been using my friend Tawna’s baby range, calledTawna Hill Baby but occasionally, would also use other brands like Aveeno-products that I thought were quite good until Tawna have send me the link to a video, which I watched over the weekend. I can tell you that it had quite an effect on me, so in a way I am grateful but I am also disappointed.

I am no scientist and often rely on my girlfriend’s advice or advice of my lovely local pharmacist, who is very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, sometimes one can watch an ad or see a label ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ and is led to believe that one is making a good choice. Many of the brand mentioned in that video link are not sold in the UK and I know that EU is a little bit more vigorous in their standards when it comes to dispensing an ‘organic’ certificate but what horrifies me is that you can go into an organic store, buy a children’s product, thinking you are making a good, informed choice but in reality those products, in most cases more expensive too, can still contain dangerous chemicals that can lead to all sorts of health consequences long -term. From now on I will make sure that I actually check the ingredients in more detail, sometimes with a help of Iphone or Ipad app that can let you know if the food or cosmetic product you are buying actually contains dangerous nasties (check out Cosmetique). That’s the least we can do for our kids, who will leave in a much more polluted and uncertain world than the one into which our parents brought us.
p.s when I was a baby there was no such thing as nappies, like Pampers or Huggies, so my parents used muslin cloths of sorts as nappies-as soon as the ‘deed’ was done, parents had to change the baby otherwise the baby was wet or dirty. In addition to sleepless night, my mum had to wash those cloths and then ‘boil’ them in the huge bucket, to make them clean/sterile.
My parents were quite fortunate because my grandparents lived in Italy when I was born, so in addition to Parma ham, Martini, toys and clothes, my grandmother has sent my mum a nappy made of special cloth-I now call it ‘nappy prototype’ - that my mum used to put on top of the muslin cloth hence I could be outside for a walk for slightly longer-so in some ways progress is not being made in the right direction and one has to bear in mind that appearances can be deceptive and dig dipper to see the real substance or lack of….

Subject - Deception - Lousy Labels
2011 March 22
This is an unbelievable story by Erica Johnson from CBC's MarketPlace one that left me feeling taken advantage of by a company that I believed to be honest to its labels. Most of the companies on here were no surprise, but the information that is revealed in this story is unfair to consumers and parents trying to use the best for their babies and family.http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/2011/lousylabels/
This is why Tawna Hill Baby was originally created - I needed to know that every ingredient going on my beautiful little girl's skin was truly safe & natural! As our product formulations exist today, we could label THB not only as 'Natural' but also as 'Organic' according to the US and Canadian standards. I believe the only way things should be labelled 'Organic' is if every single ingredient is truly Organic and not just a few of the ingredients. We all lead busy lives and not everyone is a scientist that can decipher all the words on the labels. It's our job as ethical businesses to make products that we sell to the public easy to comprehend and not trick consumers into believing something that is not the real truth.
I pledge to always keep this promise to my customers!

As parents, we know our kids aren’t the only ones with homework to do, especially when it comes to their health. The potentially harmful effects of ingredients that may be lurking in the products they use can make every purchase a nightmare. Buying cosmetics that make use of purely natural ingredients is a great start. Another good option is choosing to buy cosmetics only from companies that hold themselves to a higher standard of quality. And it never hurts to buy from a company that doesn’t require an MD to understand the ingredients inside!
Tawna Hill Baby Products, under the dynamic leadership of the eponymous Ms. Hill, is an industry leader on on all accounts. Tawna Hill uses only the finest natural ingredients and oils from the most select sources in order to guarantee that every item they offer is simple, safe, and luxurious. Ms. Hill, a mother and entrepreneur, began her lifelong passion for simple, healthy and luxurious cosmetics not long after a heroic battle against a brain tumor. Overcoming the difficulties she faced in fighting not only for her child, but her very life, were the inspiration for her brand.
Lucky Chic is therefore extremely proud to have the opportunity to host the Tawna Hill Baby Bath Time bundle. This creative blend of all natural ingredients includes a number of essential tools for the mother of a young child; oatmeal wash for the inevitable chicken pox, a gentle bath wash that cleans without causing ocular irritation, and a smoothing cream that handles everything from diaper rash to baby acne and eczema. Just a single use is all it takes to understand the Tawna Hill ethos: Simple, Safe, Luxury.
While designed with children in mind, there’s nothing wrong with an adult taking advantage of these luxury skin care options. After all, sharing is an important lesson for young children; that’s what I tell myself anyway!
Even better, Ms. Hill has committed her company to donating a portion of every sale to research dedicated to ending cancer. It’s always great to support a company with such a strong moral compass, and even easier when they create such high quality products!
So be sure to head over to the auction page and place your bids. We’re certain you’ll love the warm healthy glow of your little one’s skin, and the great knowledge that you’ll have played a small part in the fight against cancer!
Love,
Your friends at Lucky Chic
